MISSION | To promote and encourage travelers, meetings, conventions and trade shows to stop, stay and enjoy Greater Statesville’s historic, cultural, entertainment and recreational opportunities, furthering the City’s continued economic development.
BOARD RETREAT | 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
- 10:00 a.m. | Tourism Organization Structure: Rowan County
- Guest: James Meacham, CEO of Rowan County Tourism. James will explain Rowan County Tourism’s structure, how it was accomplished, and the advantages and challenges of its 501(c)(6), followed by Board questions. James began his tourism career with the Statesville Tourism Destination Authority.

- 11:00 a.m. | Statesville Event Center Improvements and Facility Tour
- Presenter: John Malascalza, Event Center Facility Supervisor. Overview of completed upgrades followed by a guided tour.

- 11:30 a.m. | Working Lunch and Draft FY2026 Annual Report Review
- Cindy Sutton, Executive Director, will review the draft copy of the FY2026 Annual Report with the Board. Board feedback will be incorporated, and the final Annual Report will be placed on the September agenda for approval prior to its release and presentation to City Council and community partners. Lunch will be brought in for Board members and invited participants.

- 1:30–3:45 p.m. | Organizational Structure Workshop
- Facilitated by Chris Cavanaugh, Magellan Strategy Group. Board working session addressing lessons from Rowan County Tourism; 501(c)(6) considerations and possible organizational paths for Statesville; governance, Board and staff responsibilities, insurance and bonding needs, policies, financial safeguards, and organizational readiness; and FY2027 priorities, decisions, responsible parties, and target dates.

- 3:45 p.m. | Break and Closed Session Preparation
- 4:00 p.m. | Consultation with Legal Counsel via Zoom
- Consultation with the Authority’s newly retained attorney. The Board must first adopt a motion in open session to enter closed session pursuant to N.C.G.S. § 143-318.11(a)(3) to preserve the attorney-client privilege.

- Consider any action appropriate for open session and summarize follow-up responsibilities without disclosing privileged communications.
