Veteran Story: Tommy Mitchell
Purple Heart Homes is honored to serve US Army Veteran Tommy Mitchell through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) program, ensuring his home in Mooresville, North Carolina is safer, more accessible, and better suited for long-term independence.
Born in 1952, Tommy served our nation during the Vietnam era, enlisting in the US Army from 1971 to 1974. He held the role of Light Weapons Infantryman and achieved the rank of Private First Class (E-3). His service and dedication were recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, and Expert Badge (M-16).
Identifying Critical Needs at Home
During Purple Heart Homes' initial site visit, it was clear that Tommy's home required urgent updates to support safe daily living. His bathroom was no longer ADA compliant and needed significant upgrades to meet code requirements. Electrical, plumbing, and flooring improvements were necessary to ensure both safety and accessibility.
Additionally, further inspection revealed that the 15-foot ramp leading to the home's entrance, including the decking and handrails, had deteriorated and required replacement. These issues created challenges for safe entry and exit from the home, impacting not only Tommy but the entire household.
The Work Completed
Through the VAIP program, Purple Heart Homes completed critical renovations designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and peace of mind:
- Fully gutted and rebuilt the bathroom to be ADA compliant
- Upgraded electrical, plumbing, and flooring systems to meet current code
- Replaced ramp decking and rails to ensure safe and secure access to the home
These improvements now provide a functional, accessible space that supports Tommy's independence and long-term ability to age safely in place.
Partners Making an Impact
This project was made possible through funding from a North Carolina Grant and the dedicated efforts of trusted contractor partners Reliable Services USA and Squad Proscapes. Their craftsmanship and commitment played a vital role in bringing these necessary improvements to life.
Together, these partnerships reflect the heart of Purple Heart Homes' mission to mobilize communities in support of Veterans.
A Lasting Difference for the Mitchell Family
The completed renovations positively impacted three household members, providing a safer and more functional living environment. While the changes may seem structural, the true impact is personal. The updates offer reassurance, comfort, and dignity, ensuring Tommy's home supports his needs today and into the future.
