Veteran Story: Brian Moore
In Bedford County, Virginia, U.S. Army National Guard Veteran Brian Moore and his wife have a new place to call home. Thanks to the support of Purple Heart Homes, the Central Virginia Chapter, and our partners at The Home Depot Foundation, Brian received a Modular Home, the first one built by Purple Heart Homes in the state of Virginia.
For the past four years, Brian and his wife lived in a small shed with electricity but no plumbing. They heated water over an open fire to wash dishes and relied on family for laundry and shower access. Despite these challenges, the couple continued operating a Veterans ministry on their property, complete with a farm, animals, and a campground where fellow Veterans can reconnect with nature through fishing, kayaking, and time on the Big Otter River.
Brian was born in 1960 and served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1987 to 2010, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7) before being honorably discharged. Over his 23 years of service, he served in three tours. On his third tour in Iraq, in April 2008, Brian was severely wounded when an explosive threw him into a concrete wall in a bunker, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury, spinal nerve damage, dislocated hip, and other last injuries. For his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Today, Brian continues to serve others. He is an ordained preacher, author, and founder of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping Veterans heal through community, ministry, and the outdoors. His deep involvement with the Veteran community extends to his memberships in the Purple Heart Homes Central Virginia Chapter, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council, and the American Legion.
Brian's new Modular Home represents more than shelter, it symbolizes hope, stability, and recognition of his lifelong service. Purple Heart Homes is proud to have partnered with The Home Depot Foundation and our Central Virginia Chapter to make this life-changing project possible.
