Celebrating the people, service, and local commitment behind Statesville Public Power

October 4-10, 2026, Statesville Public Power joins more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities across the country in celebrating Public Power Week.

This year’s theme, “Your Community. Your Utility. Your Power.,” reflects what public power means for Statesville. Our electric system belongs to the community it serves, decisions are made locally, and every employee shares a commitment to providing safe, reliable, and responsive service to our neighbors.

Proudly Powering Statesville Since 1889

Statesville holds a special place in North Carolina’s public power history. In 1889, the City became the first municipality in the state to provide electric service to its residents.

Since then, Statesville Public Power has helped power generations of homes, businesses, public facilities, and community growth. While the technology and infrastructure have changed considerably over the years, the purpose behind our work remains the same: serving Statesville.

Because Statesville Public Power is locally owned and operated, its priorities are shaped by the needs of this community. Our employees live and work here, and the customers we serve are also our friends, families, and neighbors.

The Power of Local Service

Public power provides several important benefits to the community:

Local control: Decisions about electric service are made here in Statesville by local leaders who are accountable to the community.

Reliable service: Local crews maintain the system, prepare for severe weather, and respond quickly when outages occur.

A focus on customers: As a not-for-profit public power provider, Statesville Public Power is focused on service, reliability, and the needs of the community rather than shareholders.

Investment in the future: Resources are used to maintain and improve the electric system, strengthen reliability, and prepare for the community’s future energy needs.

Mutual aid: Statesville is part of a statewide and national network of public power communities that assist one another following hurricanes, winter storms, and other major emergencies.

Across North Carolina, public power utilities provide electricity with a reliability rating of 99.99 percent. That means public power customers experience less than one hour of outage time per year on average. When an outage does occur, the people working to restore service understand the community because they are part of it.

National Recognition for Excellence

Public Power Week also provides an opportunity to recognize the dedication of the Statesville Public Power team.

In April 2026, Statesville Public Power earned the American Public Power Association’s Diamond-level Reliable Public Power Provider designation, one of the highest honors available to a public power utility. Statesville received a perfect score of 100 for its performance in reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement.

The utility also received APPA’s Diamond-level Safety Award for 2025, the highest distinction in the association’s safety recognition program.

These achievements reflect the daily work happening throughout the electric system, from maintaining infrastructure and responding to outages to completing ongoing training and following rigorous safety practices.

It recognizes the lineworkers, technicians, customer service representatives, administrative professionals, and other employees who work together to serve Statesville every day. It also celebrates the residents and businesses whose continued support has helped sustain our community-owned electric system for more than 135 years.
