Summer is in full swing, and with long sunny days and plenty of time for outdoor fun, July is the perfect month to stay active and enjoy the season. At the Statesville Fitness & Activity Center, here to support your wellness goals—whether you’re at home or on the move. Check out these July Fitness Tips designed to keep you moving and feeling your best.
Get in the Garden
Transform your yard into a relaxing oasis that boosts both your body and mind.
-
Mowing, pulling weeds, planting, and spreading mulch provide a great full-body workout.
-
Gardening tasks are a fun way to stay active without hitting the gym.
-
Growing your own vegetables adds the bonus of fresh, healthy food right from your backyard.
Sunscreen: Protect Your Skin
You know you need sunscreen when outside, but are you sure which one to use or how to apply it properly? Follow these tips to keep your skin safe this summer:
-
Choose a lotion that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
-
Look for SPF 30 or higher.
-
Apply at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and use about one ounce (a shot glass amount) for every exposed area of your body.
-
Reapply every 60-90 minutes, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.
-
Don’t forget other sun protection like lip balm, hats, sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves.
Summer Foot Health: Keep Your Feet Happy
Summer activities like beach days, pool time, and yard play are great, but remember to care for your feet to avoid injuries or infections:
-
Limit walking barefoot to prevent cuts, sunburn, and infections.
-
Wear flip-flops or slides in public showers.
-
Stay hydrated to reduce foot swelling caused by heat.
-
Apply sunscreen on your feet and ankles, too.
-
Keep feet strong with exercises like ankle flexes and calf raises.
Exercising in the Heat: Stay Safe & Smart
The sunshine and longer days offer plenty of chances to get outside and exercise—but the heat and humidity bring challenges. Protect yourself by following these precautions:
-
Exercise early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak heat.
-
Wear loose, light-colored clothing, preferably moisture-wicking fabric.
-
Don’t forget your hat and sunscreen when outdoors.
-
Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise.
-
Consult your doctor before starting any new outdoor fitness routine.
-
Be aware of signs of heat cramps or heat exhaustion, and take action to cool down if you notice symptoms.
Stay tuned each month for new tips and ways to keep your body moving and your mind motivated. Whether you’re traveling, hiking, grilling, or gardening—wellness is always in season!
