Veteran's Story: Donald McQuillan
At Purple Heart Homes, we are committed to ensuring that every Veteran has a safe and accessible place to call home. Through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program and with funding from a North Carolina Government Grant, we recently completed a project for U.S. Marine Veteran Donald McQuillan in Maysville, North Carolina.
About the Veteran
Donald McQuillan was born in 1984 and served in the U.S. Marines from July 1, 2002, to July 31, 2020, during the Operation Enduring Freedom era. Over nearly two decades of service, Donald rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant before being honorably discharged.
Like many of our nation's heroes, Donald continues to live with the lasting impacts of his service. He suffers from multiple service-connected injuries, including PTSD, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), anxiety, insomnia, asthma, migraines, and chronic back, neck, and hip pain. Despite these challenges, Donald continues to exemplify strength and resilience as he cares for his family.
The Need
When Donald reached out to Purple Heart Homes, his home was facing significant issues caused by the foundation settling. These problems made his living environment unsafe and difficult to maintain. The repairs required included drywall repair, stucco repair, and flooring repairs in the kitchen.
This project was especially impactful as it served nine people living in Donald's home, ensuring that not only the Veteran but also his family could enjoy a safer, more comfortable space.
The Project
Led by Project Manager Lamar Austin, our team worked diligently to complete the repairs. The updates addressed the structural challenges of the home and restored safety, comfort, and stability for Donald and his family. By focusing on these much-needed improvements, we helped create a living environment where Donald can better manage his health and daily life.
Gratitude for Our Partners
This project was made possible thanks to the support of the North Carolina Government Grant Program. Their partnership allows us to continue serving Veterans like Donald by funding essential home repairs that directly improve quality of life.
We are grateful for their commitment to honoring the service of our nation's heroes.
Call to Action
At Purple Heart Homes, we believe that no Veteran should face the challenge of aging or disability alone. With the help of our partners and supporters, we can continue to provide life-changing projects like this one.
