Veteran's Story: Othoniel Cruz-Rondon
At Purple Heart Homes, we are committed to ensuring our nation's Veterans can live safely and comfortably in their own homes through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program. With the support of a North Carolina Government Grant, we recently had the privilege of completing a critical home repair project for U.S. Army Veteran Othoniel Cruz-Rondon in Advance, North Carolina.
About Veteran Othoniel Cruz-Rondon
Born in 1981, Othoniel served in the United States Army from February 19, 2004 to May 1, 2015. He was assigned to Unit 0001ARSTB DIV FC and honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6).
Throughout his distinguished career, Othoniel served during the Global War on Terrorism and earned numerous decorations for his bravery and dedication. His honors include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver. These achievements reflect his strength, leadership, and unwavering service to his country.
The Need
After years of dedicated service, Othoniel now lives with service-connected injuries, including back and shoulder surgeries, severe migraines, cluster headaches, and other lasting health issues. These challenges made it necessary to address critical areas of his home to provide him with a safe, healthy, and energy-efficient living space.
The Project
Through the VAIP Program, our team was able to repair Othoniel's roof, which also required the temporary deinstallation and reinstallation of his solar panels. In addition, we made improvements to his home's vinyl siding, further securing the structure and helping ensure his home is safe and durable for years to come.
This project would not have been possible without the support of the North Carolina Government Grant, which funded these much-needed improvements.
