Veteran's Story: David Adams
At Purple Heart Homes, we are committed to ensuring that Veterans can live safely and independently in their homes. Through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, and with the support of a North Carolina Government Grant, we recently completed a project for U.S. Navy Veteran David Adams in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A Life of Service
Born in 1945, David served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era. His service spanned two enlistments, first from 1965 to 1971 and again from 1974 to 1975, as a member of the USS Canberra (CA-70) Unit. He was honorably discharged at the rank of E3.
David is a decorated Veteran, having earned the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon with 1 star, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea).
Meeting Critical Needs
Like many Veterans, David faces significant health challenges tied to his time in service, including PTSD, COPD, back issues, and complications related to Agent Orange exposure. These health concerns, combined with his mobility needs, made safe access to his home a pressing priority.
When David reached out to Purple Heart Homes, he was in need of repairs to his deck and ramp, essential features that allow him to navigate in and out of his home safely.
Restoring Safety and Dignity
Thanks to the oversight of Project Manager Valerie Black and the funding support of the North Carolina Government Grant, we were able to repair and restore David's deck and ramp. These improvements not only provide safer access but also give David greater independence and peace of mind in his daily life.
Gratitude and Support
Project's like David's are made possible by the dedication of our team, our partners, and the ongoing generosity of supporters who believe in our mission. Every ramp, roof, and repair represents more than construction, it represents a promise kept to those who served.
Call to Action
At Purple Heart Homes, we believe no Veteran should be left behind in the place they call home. If you'd like to support projects like David's and help us continue restoring independence for aging and service-connected disabled Veterans, please consider donating, volunteering, or partnering with us today. Together, we can make a difference, one home at a time.
