Veteran's Story: Willie Hogan
In Okolona, Mississippi, Purple Heart Homes, alongside The Home Depot Foundation and dedicated volunteers, made a meaningful difference in the life of U.S. Army Veteran Willie Hogan through the Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program.
A Life of Service
Born in 1950, Willie served as an Army Medic from 1969 to 1972, providing care to his fellow service members. His honorable service to our country came with lasting health challenges, Willie is an amputee below the knee and also battles liver cancer, scoliosis, and other conditions.
Honoring His Sacrifice
When mobility became a barrier in independence, Willie reached out to Purple Heart Homes for assistance. His request was simple yet essential: a ramp that would allow him to safely and easily access his home. Recognizing the urgency and importance of his need, Purple Heart Homes and The Home Depot Foundation partnered to fund this project.
With the leadership of Project Manager Lamar Austin, 12 dedicated volunteers contributed 132 total volunteer hours to make this vision a reality. The ramp not only benefits Willie but also another member of his household, making daily activities and access to appointments far safer and more manageable.
Thank You to our Partners
This project is a testament of the power of teamwork, community service, and a shared commitment to honoring our nation's heroes. Purple Heart Homes extends heartfelt gratitude to The Home Depot Foundation for funding this effort and to all volunteers who gave their time and skills to support Willie.
