Veteran's Story: Eugene Barbee
Purple Heart Homes recently completed a project in Pinehurst, North Carolina, for Korean War Veteran Eugene Barbee through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program.
Born in 1932, Eugene served in the U.S. Army from January 10, 1952, to December 9, 1954, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT).
A Life of Service
During his service, Eugene was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, and Good Conduct Medal.
A Need for Accessibility
Eugene experiences mobility challenges that require the use of a roller walker, as well as dementia, making it difficult to safely navigate his property and attend appointments. To address these needs, Purple Heart Homes installed a wheelchair lift and replaced his old driveway with a new concrete one, providing a safer and more accessible environment.
Thank You to our Partners
This project was funded through a North Carolina Government Grant and managed by Project Manager Lamar Austin. Purple Heart Homes is proud to support Veterans like Eugene, helping them live safely and independently in their own homes.
