Veteran's Story: Wiley McDowell

In North Carolina, U.S. Army Veteran Wiley McDowell can now safely access his bathroom with confidence, thanks to an ADA-compliant bathroom renovation provided through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program.

This important project, led by Project Manager Lamar Austin, was funded by a North Carolina grant and has made a meaningful difference in Wiley's life.

A Life of Service

Born in 1950, Wiley McDowell served his country during the Vietnam War era, enlisting in the United States Army and serving from 1971 to 1973. He was honorably discharged at the rank of SP4 (Specialist Four), having answered the call during one of the most challenging periods in modern American history.

During his service, Wiley earned several honors for his performance and conduct, including: the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Rifle Badge (M-16), and Good Conduct Medal.

A Growing Need for Accessibility

Now in his 70s, Wiley experiences significant mobility limitations. He lives with severely swollen feet, has difficulty walking, and has fallen several times in his home. One of the most difficult challenges he faced was simply being able to bathe.

His original bathtub had become a hazard - difficult to step into and dangerous to navigate. Recognizing the growing risk, Wiley reached out to Purple Heart Homes seeking help.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Through the Veterans Aging in Place Program, and with leadership from Project Manager Lamar Austin, Purple Heart Homes provided Wiley with a full compliant bathroom tailored to his needs.

The renovation included: safe, walk-in access, improved flooring and layout for stability, and fixtures and features designed for limited mobility and fall prevention.

This project was funded by a North Carolina grant, demonstrating the value of state-level support in helping Veterans remain safe and independent in their homes.
