Veteran's Story: Technical Sergeant Trustin Bey

In North Carolina, retired U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant (TSgt) Trustin Bey received a home improvement through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program. With help from Project Manager Lamar Austin and North Carolina grant funding, a back up generator was installed to provide reliable power during outages - giving Trustin added comfort and peace of mind.

A Career of Service Across Three Conflicts

Born in 1972, TSgt Bey began his military service in January 1992, ultimately retiring in October 2013 after over two decades in the United States Air Force. Throughout his career, he served in: The Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.

He retired at the rank of Technical Sergeant (TSgt), having built a decorated record of leadership, resilience, and service. His numerous military honors include: Air Force Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device and one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with two service stars, Southwest Asia Service Medal with one service star, and Global War or Terrorism Service Medal.

Preparing for the Unexpected

Today, Bey lives with limited mobility due to service-connected injuries, which can make power outages difficult to manage.

Having a generator in place ensures that basic needs like lighting, climate control, and home accessibility are maintained - giving him the confidence and security every homeowner deserves.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

With support from the Veterans Aging in Place Program, Purple Heart Homes installed a standby generator at Bey's home. This project was funded through a North Carolina grant, reinforcing the importance of state and community partnerships in meeting the evolving needs of aging Veterans.

The generator now ensures that in the event of a power outage, Bey can continue living safely and comfortably without disruption to essential household systems.
