Veteran Story: Gary Dean

In Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S. Army Veteran Gary Dean is now living in a safer, more energy-efficient home thanks to repairs completed through Purple Heart Homes’ Veterans Aging in Place Program.

Gary, who battles COPD and shortness of breath, reached out to Purple Heart Homes when his roof began leaking, damaging his ceilings, and when his old aluminum windows made it difficult to manage indoor temperatures or air quality. With the support of FOX Sports and Project Manager Tim Bates, Gary’s home received the upgrades it needed,

A Life of Service

Born in 1955, Gary Dean enlisted in the United States Army and served from November 1973 to September 1975, during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Specialist Four (SP4), E-4.

During his service, Gary earned: a Marksman Qualification Badge (M-16 Rifle) and a National Defense Service Medal.

Health Challenges at Home

Now retired due to a respiratory illness, Gary lives with COPD and struggles with limited lung capacity. Because of his condition, poor air circulation and temperature extremes impact his comfort and health. His roof had three active leaks, leading to ceiling damage inside, while his outdated windows were stuck shut and drafty — making it harder to breathe, rest, or manage energy costs.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Through the Veterans Aging in Place Program, Purple Heart Homes responded to Gary’s request for help by replacing the leaking roof decking and repairing ceiling damage as well as installing new energy-efficient windows that open, close, and seal properly.

These improvements were essential not only for the home's condition, but for Gary’s health, comfort, and long-term ability to remain safely in his own space.

The project was made possible thanks to generous funding from FOX Sports, and was led by Project Manager Tim Bates.
