Veteran's Story: Merlin Williamson
In Amherst, Ohio, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Merlin Williamson received support through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program, led by our Northeast Ohio Chapter. This project focused on ensuring Merlin could live safely in his home despite the long-term health challenges resulting from his service during the Vietnam War.
A Life of Courage and Commitment
Born in 1949, Merlin Williamson enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1967 to 1970, during the height of the Vietnam War, as part of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Platoon Gun Squad, 1st Marine Division.
Merlin rose to the rank of E-4 and saw heavy combat, sustaining multiple injuries in the line of duty - including a gunshot wound to his left thigh, which led to nerve damage and persistent pain. In addition to physical injuries, Merlin continues to cope with the lasting effects of PTSD, tremors, and other service-connected conditions such as: retained metal fragments, Phalciparum Malaria, chronic pain, and limited mobility.
Despite these challenges, Merlin remains active in the Veteran community as a member of the American Legion.
Honoring His Sacrifice
Merlin's service was recognized with numerous decorations, including: the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge, and Purple Heart Award.
These awards are a reflection of both his courage and the cost of service in combat.
How Purple Heart Homes Helped
As Merlin continues to age while managing his injuries, the need for a safer, more accessible home became urgent.
Through the Veterans Aging in Place Program, the Northeast Ohio Chapter identified and addressed Merlin's needs. With leadership from Project Manager Tim Bates, the team provided a fully ADA-compliant bathroom to support Merlin's mobility and safety.
This update was funded through chapter efforts and a VA grant.
The new bathroom has given Merlin peace of mind and improved his daily routines, enabling him to remain in his home with greater independence.
Our Mission in Action
