Veteran Story: Peter Chryst
In Matthews, North Carolina, Purple Heart Homes had the privilege of supporting a Veteran whose life has been defined by resilience, dedication, and service to our nation. Born in 1976, SFC Peter Chryst served in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army National Guard, dedicating more than two decades of his life to protecting our country.
From 1995 to 1999 and again from 2000 to 2017, Peter served during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Field Artillery Radar Operator and as a Human Resources Specialist. His service earned him a long list of decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Two Campaign Stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with the "M" Device, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and many more recognitions that reflect his commitment, sacrifice, and leadership.
Today, Peter continues to face daily challenges brought on by Parkinson's disease. Even simple tasks at home have become increasingly difficult and unsafe, especially accessing the attic space through steep pull down stairs. Carrying necessary items up and down those steps posed a significant fall risk, and both he and his family worried about his safety.
Creating a Safer and More Accessible Home
In April of 2024, Purple Heart Homes began work to improve Peter's accessibility at home. By replacing the steep pull down attic stairs and constructing safer, more stable stairs with a built in doorway, our team helped remove a barrier that had been affecting Peter's independence and quality of life.
This project was made possible thanks to the support from Lowe's and the North Carolina Government, whose grant funding helps provide accessible housing solutions for Veterans across the state. The renovation was completed in August of 2025 and has made a meaningful difference for the entire household of three. Peter can now safely and confidently access into the attic without fear of falling or losing balance, giving him renewed stability and dignity in his daily routine.
A Veteran Worth Honoring
Although he did not seek recognition, Peter's service speaks volumes. He volunteered when his country called, served in two branches of the military, and spent more than 20 years standing ready for others. Being able to support him in return is not only the heart of our mission but a privilege for everyone involved.
