Veteran Story: Caleb Rumney

When disaster strikes, the effects can linger long after the storm has passed. For U.S. Army National Guard Soldier, Caleb Rumney, and his family in Ninety Six, South Carolina, Hurricane Helene left behind more than visible damage. It compromised the safety and stability of their home.

Purple Heart Homes was honored to stand alongside Caleb and help restore a sense of security where it matters most: at home.

Serving Through the National Guard

Born in 1993, Caleb currently serves in the U.S. Army National Guard and holds the rank of Private Second Class. His military speciality is firefighter, a role centered on emergency response, safety, and protecting others in high-risk situations.

Caleb has been awarded the Army Service Ribbon and continues to serve with dedication and commitment. Like many members of the National Guard, he balances the demands of service while building a life at home with his family.

When the Storm Passed, the Work Began

Hurricane Helene caused extensive water damage to a portion of Caleb's home, impacting both the exterior and interior. Rotten wood and damaged flooring created unsafe conditions for Caleb and the two other members of his household.

Through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place program, critical repairs were completed to restore the home's safety and livability. This December, teams worked to replace all damaged and rotten wood and install new flooring throughout the affected areas of the home.

These repairs were not cosmetic. They were essential steps in helping ensure Caleb and his family could remain safely in their home.

A Partnership Built on Gratitude

This project was made possible through the generous support of the Patriot Military Family Foundation. Their commitment to supporting service members and their families helped transform storm damage into renewed stability and peace of mind.

Honoring Service Through Action

At Purple Heart Homes, it is a privilege to give back to service members like Caleb. His continued service in the Army National Guard reflects a commitment to protecting others, even while facing challenges of his own.

By helping restore his home after Hurricane Helene, we honor his service not only with words, but through meaningful action that supports safety, dignity, and independence.
