Veteran Story: Othoniel Cruz-Rondon
In Advance, North Carolina, U.S. Army Veteran Othoniel Cruz-Rondon and his family are resting a little easier thanks to the critical home repair project made possible through a North Carolina government grant, the support of Purple Heart Homes, and the dedication of several community partners. In total, this project provided improved living conditions for six people in Othoniel's household.
Born in 1981, Othoniel served our nation from 2004 to 2015 as an infantryman, deploying during both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Over his 11 years of service, he demonstrated courage and leadership, completing his military career at the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG). His service reflects a commitment to excellence and sacrifice, shown through honors such as the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, and numerous development and qualification achievements. He also earned both the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
Despite his service to others, Othoniel found himself facing structural challenges at home that he could not address alone. His roof had begun to fail, threatening the safety and stability of his home and placing his family at risk. When he reached out to Purple Heart Homes, we recognized the urgency of helping him restore a safe, functional, and dependable living environment.
Thanks to a North Carolina state grant and the partnership of skilled contractors, we were able to replace Othoniel's damaged roof and reinstall the solar panels that power his home. These improvements not only provide immediate safety, but also support long-term energy efficiency that will benefit the family for years to come.
This project was completed with the help and generosity of several partners. We extend our appreciation to Stevenson Builders, Troops Haul Junk, Renu Energy Solutions, and their sister service and repair company, Sun Service Specialist, for their commitment to making this project possible. We also want to highlight the leadership of Project Manager Matt Stevenson, whose dedication helped ensure the project's success.
Today, Othoniel and his family have a secure roof over their heads and renewed peace of mind, another example of how powerful it is when communities come together to support those who served.
