Veteran's Story: Dean Williams

At Purple Heart Homes, we are proud to ensure that Veterans can age safely and comfortably in their homes. Through our Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program, and with funding from Lowe's and a North Carolina Government Grant, we recently completed a project for U.S. Army Veteran Dean Williams in Nebo, North Carolina.

Dean's Service

Dean Williams was born in 1951 and served his country in the U.S. Army from September 1974 to September 1977 during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged at the rank of E-4.

During his time in service, Dean was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Expert Badge M-16.

The Need

Dean is service-connected disabled, living with lasting health challenges including severe headaches, hearing loss, and a shoulder injury. These conditions made everyday life in his home more difficult and unsafe, particularly in areas requiring mobility and accessibility.

To address his needs, Dean required a walk-in shower, ADA toilet, and a sliding glass door, improvements that would provide safety and restore independence in his home.

The Project

Led by Project Manager Lamar Austin, our team made the necessary updates to Dean's home, installing the walk-in shower, ADA-compliant toilet, and new sliding glass door. These repairs not only improved his home but also created a safer, more accessible living environment tailored to his health needs.

Gratitude to Our Partners

This project was made possible thanks to the continued support of Lowe's and the North Carolina Government Grant Program. Their investment in Veterans like Dean enables us to deliver meaningful housing solutions that change lives.

Call to Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe that no Veteran should face the challenges of aging or disability alone. Projects like Dean's are possible only through the support of our partners, donors, and volunteers.
