‘They’re Giving Me a Chance’ | Tiny Homes Created for Homeless Veterans in Statesville

As homelessness continues to affect hundreds of veterans across North Carolina, two nonprofits, Fifth Street Ministries and Purple Heart Homes, have teamed up to provide tiny homes as an affordable, lasting solution. With 183 homeless veterans in Mecklenburg County alone, including 36 who are chronically homeless, their project in Statesville is offering more than just shelter. It’s giving veterans like Charles Lee Hewitt a real opportunity to rebuild. The homes are intentionally small to keep costs manageable while still giving residents the dignity of a traditional home. Hewitt, one of the first veterans to move in, sees this as more than a roof over his head; it’s a second chance at life.
