Quilts for a Hero: Act of Compassion for Local Veteran

Article by WFMY Staff, originally published on WFMY on December 13, 2013

Sometimes, it is the quiet gestures that mean the most. After seeing WFMY’s story about Sgt. Nathan Harris, receiving a renovated home from Purple Heart Homes this past Veterans Day, Linda Starkey of Kernersville felt moved to act. Wanting to help his new house feel more like home, she handcrafted two quilts, one inspired by her Marine husband and stitched with deep patriotic pride.

Sgt. Harris, who was injured in Afghanistan and recently settled into his new accessible home, said the gift reminded him that support does not stop at the front door. His mother echoed the importance of ongoing care for returning veterans. Thanks to Purple Heart Homes and people like Starkey, this project became more than a house. It became a community effort to honor a life of service and sacrifice.
