Statesville Fire Department Launches Officer Development Program
The Statesville Fire Department (SFD) is committed to preparing its firefighters for future leadership roles through structured career development. This September, more than 20 firefighters took part in the department’s first Officer Development Program – Level 1 (ODP-I), a weeklong initiative designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and abilities of those aspiring to become Company Officers.
Held from September 8–12, 2025, ODP-I introduced participants to a wide range of topics essential for leadership success. Instruction covered administrative responsibilities, strategies and tactics, and valuable guidance from current officers. Training was led not only by SFD leaders from various ranks, but also by representatives from the City Attorney’s Office, Atrium Health, and Human Resources – ensuring a comprehensive approach that blends operational readiness with organizational awareness.
Building on Career Pathways
ODP-I is a new addition to SFD’s career development path for the position of Senior Firefighter. In the past, firefighters preparing for advancement completed a Relief Captain task book. The addition of ODP-I now provides face-to-face training opportunities that help bridge knowledge gaps, enhance practical skills, and foster professional growth.
Deputy Chief Kyle Bell, who helped lead the program, emphasized that the goal is to support firefighters not just in meeting promotion requirements, but in thriving as future leaders of the department.
A Multi-Level Program
To ensure continued growth throughout an officer’s career, SFD has also developed ODP-II and ODP-III. These advanced levels are designed for current officers seeking to deepen their knowledge, sharpen their decision-making, and broaden their leadership capabilities. Together, the three tiers of the program provide a clear, progressive pathway for professional development within the department.
Investing in the Future
The Officer Development Program demonstrates SFD’s commitment to investing in its people. By preparing firefighters today for the responsibilities of tomorrow, the department ensures that the community continues to be served by capable, confident, and well-prepared leaders.
