City Manager September 2025 Update to City Council


At the September 15, 2025, City Council meeting, City Manager Ron Smith shared important updates on projects, community improvements, and city operations.

Major Construction & Project Updates

  • Police Department Expansion & Parking Deck – A crane is being installed the week of September 15, with pre-cast concrete deliveries beginning September 22. Demolition work is underway at the existing building, and storm drain installation continues along Front Street.
  • Statesville Regional Airport Terminal – The third-floor balcony roof is complete. Next steps include installing doors, stair railings, and the generator. Completion is still on track for late December 2025.
  • Tradd Street Sinkhole – Repairs are expected to wrap up by the end of September. Work has been delayed due to water line issues but is moving forward with contractor coordination.
  • Fire Station 5 – The City received 150 applications for 15 open firefighter positions, with written testing underway. Tree removal and site planning continue at no cost to the City.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Garage – Now operational, staff expressed their appreciation for the improved workspace.

Parks & Recreation

  • Kimbrough Park – A new playground is complete, with a new shelter kit arriving in November.
  • MLK Jr. Park – Pickleball court installation has been awarded. Work will include demolition of horseshoe courts and installation of new surfaces, fencing, and equipment, with construction taking about 90 days.

Public Works & Utilities

  • Street Closures are scheduled in September, including portions of N. Center Street, Water Street, Stockton Street, and Brookdale.
  • Outage Management System – A new tool will soon provide real-time power outage maps and text notifications. Residents are encouraged to update their contact information with customer service.

Community Engagement & Key Dates

City Employment Updates

The City is hiring for several positions, including a Budget Management Analyst, Group Fitness Instructor, Police Officer, and more.

Recent promotions and transfers include advancements within the Police Department, Public Utilities, and Statesville Public Power. Employees also achieved new certifications and career development milestones. Additionally, the City welcomed new team members in Public Works, IT, the Airport, and the Police Department.
