City of Statesville Announces Changes to Municipal Election Process

The City of Statesville is announcing important changes to the upcoming municipal election process, following the adoption of a Charter amendment by the City Council on June 2, 2025.

Beginning with this year’s election, the Mayor and members of the Statesville City Council will now be elected under a nonpartisan plurality method.

Under this method, there will be only one election – no runoff elections will take place. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes for each seat will be declared the winner.

Additionally, the City Council approved a change to the election cycle for at-large Council seats to implement staggered terms. To begin this staggered cycle:

  • In the 2025 election only, the at-large candidate receiving the highest number of votes will serve a four-year term, and the at-large candidate receiving the second-highest number of votes will serve a two-year term.
  • After this election, all at-large Council terms will be four years, and the staggered cycle will continue with one at-large seat being up for election every two years.

Another benefit of this new election schedule is that every city resident will be able to vote in each municipal election – either for an at-large Council seat, a ward representative, or the Mayor – helping to keep all voters engaged in every election cycle.

The following positions will appear on the November 4, 2025 ballot:

  • Mayor
  • At-Large City Council Members (2 seats)
  • City Council Members representing Wards 2, 3, and 5

Candidate filing for these offices opens on July 7, 2025, and closes at 12:00 p.m. on July 18, 2025.
