Statesville Fire Department Hazmat Team Honored for Statewide Achievement
The Statesville Fire Department’s Hazmat Team was recognized at last night’s City Council meeting for their outstanding performance in the 2025 North Carolina Hazmat Challenge, held earlier this year.
Deputy Fire Chief Kyle Bell presented the recognition and praised the team for their continued excellence and commitment to safety. Competing against six teams from across the state – Including elite regional response teams – Statesville’s Hazmat Team placed third overall. The challenge, held during the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs Mid-Winter Conference, included both a comprehensive trivia quiz and hands-on practical skill stations designed to test knowledge, teamwork, and real-world response capabilities.
Three members of the team were present at the meeting to accept the recognition:
- Captain Eddy Harpe
- Lieutenant Bryan Morris
- Firefighter Travis Akins
Captain Matt Thompson, who also competed in the challenge, was unable to attend.
This marks the third consecutive year that the Statesville Fire Department has participated in the statewide challenge—and each time, they’ve placed in the top four. Notably, the team brought home first place in 2022.
“These firefighters train day in and day out to stay sharp and ready,” said Bell. “Their performance in this challenge reflects the level of dedication they bring to protecting our community from hazardous materials incidents. We’re proud of their accomplishments and proud to have them representing the City of Statesville.”
The team will compete again this August in Raleigh, and the city is excited to cheer them on.
