SFD Enhances Safety with Ballistic Protective Vests
The role of firefighters has expanded beyond battling fires. Today, firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies, including hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, and medical crises. They are also called to scenes involving potential violence, such as active shooter situations or incidents where weapons may be involved. To better protect its personnel in these high-risk environments, the Statesville Fire Department has added ballistic protective vests to each of its apparatus.
While SFD has not experienced gun violence against its responders, the department is committed to preparing for all possible threats. Firefighters will wear the vests when responding to situations with a risk of violence, ensuring they can perform their life-saving duties without compromising their safety. However, the vests will not be worn while operating in active fire environments, as firefighters must wear their standard fire protective gear in those situations.
Each vest is designed specifically for first responders, offering essential protection against firearms and other ballistic threats. The addition of this equipment reflects a growing nationwide recognition of the dangers firefighters may face beyond the fireground. Tragic incidents, such as the 2019 Virginia Beach municipal building shooting, have highlighted the importance of body armor for first responders.
The ballistic vests are black with red lettering, ensuring high visibility while maintaining a professional appearance. Each SFD apparatus will be equipped with five vests, providing protection for multiple crew members when responding to calls involving potential violence.
By taking this proactive step, the Statesville Fire Department is prioritizing firefighter safety while continuing its commitment to serving and protecting the community in every emergency.
