Honoring Decades of Leadership: Councilmen Steve Johnson and Jap Johnson Recognized for Service on Airport Commission
During the November 12, 2025, meeting of the Statesville Airport Commission, Councilmen Steve Johnson and Jap Johnson were recognized for their many years of dedicated service to the growth and success of the Statesville Regional Airport. Both will retire from City Council on December 1, marking the end of distinguished tenures in public service.
Mayor Costi Kutteh and Airport Manager John Ferguson presented awards to the two councilmen, expressing gratitude for their commitment and long-standing support of the airport.
Councilman Steve Johnson has served on the Airport Commission since 1989 and has held the role of chairperson for the last 25 years. Originally appointed while serving on the Iredell County Board of Commissioners, he continued his service after joining the Statesville City Council, demonstrating a lasting dedication to the city’s aviation development. Over the decades, he played a key role in guiding the airport from a small general aviation facility to a regional asset that contributes significantly to economic growth and opportunity.
Councilman Jap Johnson has also contributed more than 30 years of service as a member of the Airport Commission. His leadership and vision have helped support the airport’s continued progress and modernization. Both men expressed pride in the transformation of the airport over the years and in being part of the team that helped make it what it is today.
