Celebrating Public Power Week 2025 in Statesville

Honoring Our Past, Powering Our Future

October 5 - 11, 2025 marks Public Power Week, a nationwide celebration recognizing the more than 2,000 communities across the United States that are powered by public power. Here in Statesville, we’re proud to hold a special place in history as North Carolina’s first Public Power Community. Since the early days of bringing electricity to our citizens, we’ve remained committed to providing safe, reliable, and community-focused electric service.

Our Legacy of Public Power

The City of Statesville was the very first municipality in North Carolina to provide electric service to its residents. This historic milestone not only powered homes and businesses but also laid the foundation for the growth and success of our community. Unlike investor-owned utilities, public power is locally owned and operated - which means decisions are made right here at home, with the best interests of our neighbors in mind.

The Value of Public Power Today

Public power isn’t just about electricity - it’s about community strength and resilience. Here are just a few ways it benefits us today:

  • Reliability: Our crews live and work here in Statesville. When storms or outages happen, we respond quickly because we’re your neighbors, too.
  • Affordability: Revenues stay local, reinvested back into services, schools, and improvements that directly benefit our community - not sent to out-of-state shareholders.
  • Community Support: Public power creates local jobs, supports small businesses, and helps keep Statesville strong.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate Public Power Week, we also look toward the future. The City of Statesville continues to invest in infrastructure, expand opportunities for innovation, and prioritize reliability. Our commitment is not only to keeping the lights on but also to building a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.

A Community Celebration

Public Power Week is about more than electricity - it’s about the people who make it all possible. From our hardworking crews to the families and businesses we serve, Statesville’s story is a reminder of the power of community.

This week, join us in celebrating what makes Statesville unique. Together, we honor our history and embrace the future of public power. Thank you for letting us be part of your lives - for over a century and for years to come.
