Cheney Brothers Inc.’s (CBI) is the recipient of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Carolinas Excellence
Statesville, NC—Cheney Brothers Inc.’s (CBI) cold storage addition to its Statesville distribution center is the recipient of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Carolinas Excellence in Construction Program’s Eagle Award and has been nominated for the organization’s Project of the Year.
The designation of Project of the Year is a prestigious award that recognizes the single project, regardless of project type and market, that best exemplifies the contribution of quality construction in the Carolinas. It is selected from the Excellence in Construction Eagle Award recipients from specific industry categories.
Design-Build firm A M King designed and built this sizeable expansion project for CBI, which was completed in April. The Keith Corporation (TKC), a N.C.-based developer, served as program manager for the project. The 169,883-square-foot cold storage addition on the 30-acre site allows the company to expand its refrigeration capabilities in this region and brings the total building square footage to 265,000. More than 100 full-time jobs were added at the facility located within the Statesville Business Park.
“It was a pleasure partnering with A M King,” said Warren Newell, Cheney Brothers Director of Development. “We’re thrilled that the project won an Eagle Award for them and are honored that this expansion for CBI has been nominated for Project of the Year.”
The expansion area features a state-of-the art penthouse refrigeration system zoned to support numerous interior temperature zones; robotic truck wash center; fueling station; guardhouse; new fire protection systems and a complex site work package.
The project also included renovation of a 34,686-square-foot existing dry warehouse and conversion of a 37,388-square-foot existing cold storage space to ambient temperature storage. Notable was the development of a 2,000-square-foot, full commercial test kitchen; construction of a new interior office mezzanine and 25 new dock doors; installation of a 2,000 kW 480V 3-phase generator and a complete LED light overhaul. A M King used 900 tons of steel and 7.534 cubic yards of concrete during the expansion and renovation, all while assisting CBI with maintaining ongoing operations.
“It’s been great working with CBI as a new client on this award-winning food distribution center,” says A M King Vice President Dan Crist. “We are excited to be a part of CBI’s growth in the region, including the company’s Southern Foods food processing project currently under construction.”
The Project of the Year winner will be announced at the 18th Annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala on Nov. 7 at The Westin Charlotte. In addition, A M King will submit this project for a National Excellence in Construction Award. Winners will be celebrated at the 30th Annual National Excellence in Construction Awards Gala in Nashville on March 26, 2020.
