Community Life - Lifestyles and Leisure
Nestled among long shady streets, just beyond the farms and nearby rolling hills and valleys, lie the warm and friendly neighbors of Statesville. It's a good life we share here in the Piedmont. Nature tempts us with her beauty and, as the seasons unfold, attractions and music keep us well entertained. In the Greater Statesville area, one seldom wants for more than is available just around the corner.
Recreation
Two recreation departments offering a multitude of organized sports and instructional programs, support the pastimes of local residents. Statesville Recreation and Parks Department caters to essentially every age group and offers competitive league play in traditional sports such as baseball, basketball and football. Volleyball and team wrestling are also popular, as are adult and co-ed sports. Aerobics, ceramics, Shag dancing and much more are offered in a classroom environment.
Residents take advantage of the more than 175 acres of public parks in the Statesville area. From fitness trails to open spaces, the parks are well-maintained and safe, many with lighted courts and recreation areas.
For residents throughout the county, Iredell County Department of Recreation offers a variety of sports and recreation opportunities. In addition to league sports such as baseball, softball, T-ball and soccer, outdoor adventure programming, organized rafting, hiking, and camping trips are among the offerings and make a unique addition to the area's recreational bonanza.
Statesville is also home to a state of the art YMCA facility. It includes an indoor swimming pool and a training room, locker rooms, steam room, Nautilus center, free weight rooms, two gyms, indoor walk/jog track, aerobics studio, meeting rooms, nursery, youth center with outdoor pavilion, and snack area. The YMCA also offers an after school program and a summer camp program.
Golf is more than a hobby in Statesville. For many, it's a way of life. Supporting the sport are public, semi-private and private courses. These courses offer challenging play in a natural setting of pines, hardwoods and gently rolling fairways.
If water sports are more to your liking, Lake Norman's 520 miles of shoreline is a dream come true. On any given day, dozens of sails dot the horizon. Windsurfing, skiing, and jet skiing are also popular. The fishing is excellent, and anglers can expect trophy caliber catches almost year-round.
For those craving the exciting pace of a metropolitan environment, North Carolina's largest city, Charlotte, is only a short forty minutes away. Symphonic performances, the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats, Charlotte Checkers, NASCAR racing, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and much more are all at your fingertips.
Religion
At the heart of every strong community is a common bond, a web that is woven to touch every resident and unite all in the pursuit of a higher meaning. Each week, residents flock to churches, chapels and synagogues in search of their own personal truth. With over 140 places of worship in the area, most denominations are represented. We encourage all newcomers to worship in a way befitting his or her personal beliefs.
Crime
The Greater Statesville Crime Stoppers program was started in 1980 by the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce, in association with the Statesville Police Department and the Iredell County Sheriff's Office. Our program was the first Crime Stoppers program in this part of the country. Crime Stoppers is now a successful worldwide program, due in part to the efforts of the Statesville program and the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce in the early 1980's.
Crime Stoppers is administered by a volunteer Board of Directors that pays reward money for information on unsolved felony crimes or serious misdemeanors. Informants are able to call into a special Crime Stoppers phone line with this information and do not have to reveal their identity or testify in court. The reward amount is based on the severity of the crime, the amount of stolen property or drugs recovered, how quick the officers were able to apprehend the criminal, etc. The Board is also responsible for raising the necessary reward money to pay these informants.
Our Crime Stoppers number is
704-437-COPS (2677).
